Fitness at 38
A few more weeks and I’d have to change this title to 39. wow, life really gets in the way doesn’t it? If we don’t want to work out or get in shape we can always find an excuse, there is always one available.
- I don’t have time.
- I’m too tired.
- I don’t want to work out at a gym where everyone is in shape.
- It’s hard to eat healthy meals
How do I know all those excuses? I used to use them. There was a day I could eat what I wanted, drink however much I wanted and not gain a pound. Heck, my mom will tell you that when I was a teenager I lived on the two cheeseburger meal from McDonalds.
If I did that today, well I’d probably be too obese to type this post. There is one thing I’ve learned – if we get in a habit of working out and being fit and if we make that a lifestyle the benefits carry over into other areas of our lives.
Almost immediately – I’d say about a month you start to notice a higher energy level, more confidence and you’ll find yourself in a better mood because your life outlook changes.
You just have to start somewhere. I’ve also been a roller coaster workout artist. Oh yes, I said artist – because doing that requires creativity. I’d work out 4 times in one week, none the next and maybe one the following week and then back to 4 times the next week – then I’d find myself frustrated because I wasn’t seeing an improvement. Funny, isn’t it?
We don’t get out of shape overnight, but we complain when we don’t start to see a noticeable difference in 7 days.
For me working out and being in shape (or rather getting there) requires a commitment, a regular schedule, and determination to hit my end goal. Oh, it also requires fantastic music to keep me motivated. I often won’t even listen to a new album until I hit the gym – it helps me to be excited about the workout.
The biggest thing is you just have to start somewhere. If you don’t want to go to the gym when all the Barbie and Kens are there, well go in the morning – early morning – the gym often looks like a ghost town or is filled with people who are just there to workout, not put on a fashion show.
I made a commitment this year to get in the best shape that I’ve ever been in and there were things that made me want to do that, besides my own ego and just wanting to look good. My family struggles with being overweight, my mother just had knee replacement surgery and we have a history of heart disease and cancer. I wanted to show my 14 year old son that you could in fact live a healthy and fulfilling life. It’s not easy and I still fight the excusism disease, but I’m sticking with it.
What about you? Where will you start?
