Do What You Know and Do It Well

I often see companies that dabble into things here and there, but they are never focused on a speciality.  It’s important to find what you know and do it well.  This creates recognition and a true perception of expertise.

There is a company in the River Market that sells cupcakes, one might wonder how a business could make it on selling cupcakes  - but they do and there are people lined up out the door every afternoon to purchase cupcakes.  They know how to make cupcakes and they do it well and because of that people know who they are and where they are.  When they crave that chocolate cupcake with peanut butter icing they make their way to BabyCakes.

My point is if you look at companies that have found success and are able to stabilize in the downturn of the economy it is a company that has found their speciality and have developed their expertise around that speciality.  While others chase down business, their phone rings.  Is your phone ringing? If not you might want to ask yourself what is you know and are you doing it well or are you all over the board without a speciality.

What do you know and are you doing it well?
