Creativity Slump

It is true there are days I don’t feel creative. I can slam 2 caramel macchiatos from starbucks, do a 5 mile walk and still get NOTHING! In marketing we are expected to be creative daily. Daily we are Idea generators, creative thinkers, and solution providers. We love those roles, that’s why we chose this profession. However, there are days our minds are empty. How can you jumpstart that creative flow? Here are a few suggestions:

1. Meditation - Get out of your office, go outside and take 10 minutes to just listen to the sounds around you. Don’t try to come up with idea, but just enjoy the fresh air and the sounds of nature that you hear - even if it is just a car driving down the street.

2. Read - Read for the enjoyment of it, not for the benefit of it. Read something totally not related to marketing, perhaps a fiction book?

3. Child’s Play - Draw a picture with crayons or paint a picture with watercolors. Allow yourself to find joy in activities that you did as a child.

4. Write - Just write. Take 15 minutes and write about anything you want to write about. Don’t worry about grammatical errors or spelling just escape into your words. (That’s how LauraLake.com got started)

5. Visit a new restaurant for lunch. Go by yourself - it’s ok..you can do that now and not appear like a weirdo. Pay attention to your surroundings, try something on the menu you haven’t tried before.

What do you do when you find yourself in that creative slump?
