Age of Love — No Target Advertising to Women?

by Laura Lake on June 19, 2007

It’s true, I found myself watching the new dating series Age of Love — Kittens vs. Cougars. I’m at that middle age of 35, so guess you could say the “experiment” as they are calling it intrigued me.

What I was surprised by is the lack of targeted advertisements in the commercial breaks. I figured we would see botox, teeth whitening, financial advisors, and perhaps even fitness commercials. After all this show targets both ends of the female age spectrum. The 40 year olds who are trying to get their youth back and the 20 year olds who are trying to appear sophisticated and intelligent.

I won’t give you my personal opinion on the show because it’s not warranted in this post, but what does amaze me is why we as women still never feel as if we are enough in who we are. I suppose we all learn this in our own time I wouldn’t say I’m above it and it’s something I’m still trying to grasp a hold of. I go to the gym 4 to 5 times a week, I’m headed to the dentist to be fitted for whitening trays, I still try to shop in the juniors department and yes I’ve had some cosmetic surgery done and will probably do more in the future.

Am I trying to recapture my youth or just modifying and prevent flaws that really just make-up who I am? Interesting question and I wonder how much of a role “marketing to women” and my career in marketing has played in this process.
